Airbus, Iberia, Air Nostrum, Aena, Repsol, and Exolum have joined forces to explore the establishment of a hydrogen airport hub in Spain. This partnership aims to examine the challenges associated with incorporating hydrogen technology into airport operations, with a focus on both supply infrastructure and ground handling requirements. The initiative seeks to create a comprehensive understanding of integrating hydrogen-powered aircraft, covering the entire value chain from energy production to operational aspects. Iberia's director of sustainability, Teresa Parejo, views hydrogen as a key component of aviation's sustainable future and stresses the need to initiate steps towards its adoption now. Air Nostrum points out the potential for regional carriers to lead in adopting hydrogen technology, given their smaller aircraft and shorter flight routes. Airbus has already secured agreements for hydrogen hubs with various partners globally, with Spain identified as a promising location for low-carbon hydrogen production. The collaborative effort underscores the importance of end-to-end cooperation to drive innovation and sustainability in the aviation sector.
