Cummins, a US engine manufacturer, has acquired First Mode, a Seattle-based company specializing in electrifying mining and rail vehicles. First Mode, previously majority-owned by Anglo American, is recognized for converting dump trucks to electric power. Cummins took over the majority of First Mode's assets and employees on February 11, integrating the company into its Power Systems division. This acquisition covers all hydrogen and battery drive solutions and includes First Mode's production and engineering teams in Australia, the USA, and Chile. First Mode is known for its hybrid retrofit system that combines fuel cell and battery technology for mining machines, providing cost-effective decarbonization solutions. Cummins' President of Power Systems, Jenny Bush, highlighted this acquisition as a crucial step in leading customers through the energy transition, emphasizing the acceleration of decarbonization solutions for miners. Cummins, traditionally focused on engines, is diversifying its offerings into alternative drive and energy solutions, evident through its Accelera brand. By acquiring First Mode, Cummins aims to bolster its position in the evolving landscape of electrification and decarbonization in the mining and rail sectors.
