Equatic, in partnership with Canadian carbon removal project developer Deep Sky, has initiated the engineering phase of North America's largest ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) plant in Quebec. This plant aims to remove 109,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually while also producing 3,600 tonnes of green hydrogen. The project marks a significant step towards achieving cost-effective carbon removal solutions, with an ambitious target of less than $100 per tonne by 2030. The collaboration follows Equatic's recent project launch in Singapore and its recognition as a Department of Energy Carbon Dioxide Removal Purchase Pilot Prize semifinalist. Arup, chosen for leading the assessment and planning of the commercial-scale plant, will incorporate modular electrolyzers, similar to those used at Equatic-1, to facilitate systematic expansion and efficient operations. The plant's design includes innovative oxygen-selective anodes that enable the production of green hydrogen while eliminating unwanted chlorine production during seawater electrolysis. Moreover, Equatic's adherence to advanced measurement and reporting standards ensures transparency and verification of greenhouse gas emissions and removals. The partnership between Equatic and Deep Sky emphasizes the importance of accelerating climate solutions, especially in the context of growing climate urgency. By pre-selling carbon credits and green hydrogen to companies like Boeing, Equatic demonstrates its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The project aims to set a standard for community acceptance and environmental well-being in the development of essential climate technology, aligning with global efforts to address climate change and drive innovation in carbon removal and green hydrogen generation.
