Equatic, in partnership with Deep Sky, has initiated the engineering of North America's pioneering commercial-scale ocean-based carbon removal plant, set to be the largest of its kind globally. This innovative plant will not only remove 109,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually but also produce 3,600 tonnes of green hydrogen, contributing significantly to combating climate change. The project aligns with the global call for accessible and cost-effective carbon removal solutions, with plans to achieve carbon removal at less than $100 per tonne by 2030. The collaboration between Equatic and Deep Sky aims to accelerate the development of commercial facilities to address the growing climate crisis, with the plant's design incorporating modular electrolyzers for efficient operations and scalability. Furthermore, the project follows the highest standards of measurement, reporting, and verification to ensure transparency and credibility in quantifying greenhouse gas emissions and removals. Equatic's commitment to environmental well-being is evident through partnerships with renowned organizations like Arup and adherence to ISO standards for carbon removal projects. Carbon credits and green hydrogen from the plant have already been pre-sold to industry leaders like Boeing, demonstrating the industry's confidence in Equatic's technology. By leveraging technology developed at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering’s Institute for Carbon Management, Equatic is at the forefront of utilizing seawater electrolysis for carbon removal and green hydrogen production. This groundbreaking initiative not only addresses the urgent need for carbon removal but also sets a new standard for community acceptance and environmental stewardship in essential climate technologies.
