Fokker Next Gen Introduces Dual-Fuel Aircraft for 2035 with Liquid Hydrogen and SAF Capabilities
Key Ideas
- Fokker Next Gen to launch aircraft in 2035 running on liquid hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuels, with traditional jet fuel as backup.
- The aircraft will accommodate 120 to 150 passengers with a flight range of 2,590kms, aiming for seamless integration into current airline operations.
- Universal Hydrogen sees LH2 as a key zero-emission flight solution but not the sole option; Chart Industries joins Airbus in advancing liquid hydrogen ground operations.
Fokker Next Gen has unveiled plans for a new aircraft to be operational by 2035, designed to run on a mix of liquid hydrogen combustion (LH2) and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). This dual-fuel airplane will also be capable of using traditional jet fuel if the alternative options are not available. With a passenger capacity ranging from 120 to 150 and a flight range of 2,590 kilometers, the aircraft aims to seamlessly fit into current airline operations at a comparable cost. The company is even exploring the potential to expedite the timeline for its launch. Mark Cousin, President and Chief Technology Officer of Universal Hydrogen, highlighted the importance of embracing new fuels in addressing the climate impact of aviation. While liquid hydrogen is considered a significant solution for zero-emission flight, Cousin emphasized that it is not the only answer. He compared the safety of hydrogen to that of Jet A-1 fuel, stating that it is simply different. In a recent development, Chart Industries has joined an Airbus-led consortium focused on advancing the demonstration of small-scale liquid hydrogen aircraft ground operations at European airports. This collaborative effort further signifies the industry's momentum towards adopting innovative fuel technologies for a more sustainable aviation sector.
