Gasunie has been selected as the intended network operator for the future North Sea hydrogen network in the Netherlands. The Minister for Climate and Energy Policy, Rob Jetten, highlighted the significance of having a designated operator for the offshore network in a letter to the Dutch House of Representatives. Gasunie will now initiate the development of the hydrogen network to provide assurance to the market regarding infrastructure availability and to contribute towards achieving climate goals, enhancing energy independence, and strengthening the Netherlands' position in the industry.
Last November, Gasunie participated in an official opening ceremony with the King of the Netherlands to signal the commencement of construction for an onshore network in Holland. This milestone followed Gasunie's investment decision in July to construct the initial section of the network, with an estimated cost of €1.5 billion ($1.58 billion).
Willemien Terpstra, the CEO of Gasunie, expressed satisfaction with the government's confidence in the company for managing the hydrogen network. Terpstra emphasized readiness to build a North Sea network that not only integrates seamlessly with the national network but also establishes strong connections with neighboring countries. Additionally, Gasunie will investigate the potential for repurposing the existing North Sea gas infrastructure to support the hydrogen network.
