Several international companies have expressed interest in participating in the bidding for native hydrogen exploration in the Philippines. The Department of Energy (DOE) has opened the bidding for two predetermined areas (PDAs) in Zambales and Pangasinan, attracting companies from Australia, Europe, and North America. Energy Undersecretary Alessandro Sales mentioned that the level of interest in these areas designated for hydrogen exploration was pleasantly surprising. This bidding opportunity is unique as the Philippines is one of the few countries offering areas specifically for hydrogen exploration. The bidding process has sparked interest from various international players, with the deadline for bid submissions set for Aug. 27. Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla highlighted the natural occurrence of hydrogen in the Philippines, contrasting it with methods used by Japan and China, which involve electrolysis to produce hydrogen. The DOE is focused on selecting applicants who can demonstrate a strong understanding of the resource potential in the designated areas and propose efficient exploration and testing programs. The energy officials are optimistic about the opportunities presented by this bidding process, with a keen focus on harnessing natural hydrogen resources.
