Mexico's hydrogen industry is on the brink of a significant breakthrough, with 16 projects in the pipeline, totaling an estimated investment of $20 billion. The country's strategic geographic location and rich renewable energy sources position it as a key player in the global export of hydrogen to North America and Europe. However, the absence of a national hydrogen strategy poses challenges, prompting calls for a clear policy framework and robust regulations to attract investments. The study emphasizes the importance of leveraging Mexico's natural resources, repurposing existing infrastructure, and integrating green hydrogen into high-emission industries for decarbonization and energy efficiency. Furthermore, the industry presents significant employment opportunities across the value chain, from production to research and development. To unlock the industry's full potential, fiscal incentives, safety regulations, and public-private partnerships are essential. It is estimated that Mexico's clean hydrogen sector could draw investments worth $60 billion over the next 20 years, with 20 pilot projects already underway in various regions. The study advocates for collaborations with countries like Denmark for knowledge exchange and technology transfer, positioning Mexico as a crucial player in the global hydrogen supply chain. Overall, Mexico has the opportunity to lead the way in green hydrogen production and make a substantial impact on the global energy landscape.
