CryoVac, a Norwegian company based near Oslo, has achieved a significant milestone in the realm of liquid hydrogen shipping. Their innovative vacuum insulation technology, recently granted Approval in Principle by DNV, tackles the challenges of storing and transporting liquid hydrogen at extremely cold temperatures. This system utilizes CryoPan, a new type of vacuum insulation panel, to provide efficient and lightweight insulation, reducing hydrogen evaporation while ensuring the safety and durability of storage tanks. The approval from DNV confirms the system's compliance with regulations and its viability for implementation on vessels. CryoVac's next goal is to develop a large hydrogen carrier ship capable of both transporting and running on liquid hydrogen, contributing to a zero-emission future for maritime shipping. In addition to CryoVac's efforts, several European initiatives such as LH2 Europe, HyShip, and LH2CRAFT are working towards establishing sustainable and efficient liquid hydrogen supply chains across the continent.
