Plug Power Receives $10 Million DOE Grant to Advance Hydrogen Refueling Infrastructure
Key Ideas
- Plug Power Inc. has been awarded $10 million by the U.S. Department of Energy to demonstrate next-generation hydrogen refueling infrastructure for medium and heavy-duty vehicles at scale.
- The project, in partnership with several institutions, aims to develop a high-flow, direct-fill hydrogen fueling station with advanced technology to address the growing infrastructure needs for on-road heavy-duty vehicles.
- The project will be a commercially viable solution and the model station is expected to be operational in 2026 in Pullman, Washington, with potential replication nationwide to support hydrogen fuel cell technology adoption.
- The initiative is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's $62 million investment in 20 projects across 15 states to accelerate the deployment of next-generation clean hydrogen technologies, contributing to the nation's clean energy future.
Plug Power Inc., a global leader in comprehensive hydrogen solutions, has received a $10 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to showcase advanced hydrogen refueling infrastructure for medium and heavy-duty vehicles. The project, named HYPER-Fuel, focuses on developing a liquid-to-gaseous and cryogenic dispensing hydrogen refueling station architecture. Plug, in collaboration with Washington State University, the University of Maryland, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, will work on creating a high-flow, direct-fill hydrogen fueling station based on Plug's GenFuel technology. This station aims to offer high fueling rates, a daily capacity exceeding 2 tonnes, and different pressurized hydrogen options. The project will be managed by Plug in Slingerlands, NY, and will include various advanced technologies to make hydrogen fuel more accessible for heavy-duty applications. The funding is part of the DOE's significant investment in clean hydrogen technologies across the United States to propel the nation towards a green energy economy. Plug's expertise in hydrogen technology and its proven track record of successful refueling stations position them at the forefront of this crucial project, which aims to demonstrate the viability of these innovative solutions for widespread implementation.
