New Way Trucks and Hyzon, a hydrogen fuel cell system developer, have unveiled North America's first hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric refuse vehicle at Waste Expo in Las Vegas. This debut marks a significant milestone in showcasing the potential of hydrogen technology, particularly in the environmental services industry. The collaboration between the two companies aims to address key challenges faced by traditional heavy-duty diesel engines, such as range limitations and payload constraints. By integrating New Way's Sidewinder automated side loader with Hyzon's hydrogen fuel cell drivetrain, the partnership offers a lighter weight refuse vehicle with enhanced payload capacity and performance comparable to diesel and CNG trucks. Trials conducted in California, Canada, and Australia have demonstrated the effectiveness of hydrogen fuel cell technology in overcoming operational hurdles present in other zero-emission solutions. Hyzon's recent launch of the Class 8 200 kW FCEV tractor-trailer trial program further emphasizes the growing interest in high-performance hydrogen fuel cells. CEO Parker Meeks expressed confidence in Hyzon's technology, highlighting its capability to power zero-emission vehicles for the demanding tasks of refuse collection.
