South America's First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Locomotive Embarks on Innovation Journey
Key Ideas
  • Ferrocarril de Antofagasta (FCAB) introduces South America's first hydrogen fuel cell locomotive for operations between Chile and Bolivia, aiming to enhance innovation in the region.
  • The 1,000 kW fuel cell locomotive, developed in China, is lighter than other models and utilizes a hydrogen storage system paired with high-capacity batteries, contributing to reduced emissions.
  • FCAB's initiative aligns with a broader strategy to transition from diesel-fueled equipment, as demonstrated by the introduction of the largest fleet of electric pickup trucks in Chilean mining at the Centinela mine in 2023.
  • The company's focus on green hydrogen supply, construction of supporting infrastructure, and employee training highlights a commitment to environmental sustainability and technological advancement.
South America is on the verge of a significant milestone with the introduction of the continent's first hydrogen fuel cell locomotive by Ferrocarril de Antofagasta (FCAB). This locomotive, set to operate between Chile and Bolivia on the Antofagasta-Bolivia rail network, represents a leap towards innovation in the region. Developed in China by CRRC Qishuyan, the 1,000 kW fuel cell locomotive is equipped with a 35 MPa hydrogen storage system and high-capacity batteries, making it lighter than its counterparts while reducing emissions. FCAB's CEO, Iván Arriagada, emphasized the importance of exploring hydrogen as a fuel source due to its environmentally friendly properties. This initiative is part of FCAB's strategy to replace diesel-fueled equipment, as seen in the introduction of electric vehicles at the Centinela mine in 2023. By securing a supply of green hydrogen and investing in infrastructure and training, FCAB is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also paving the way for future applications of hydrogen technology in the transportation sector.
