Walmart Canada has taken a significant step towards sustainability by introducing a hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric semi-truck into its fleet in Mississauga, Ontario. Manufactured by Nikola, the Hydrogen Fuel Cell EV Class 8 truck, with its 800km range, marks a shift towards Walmart Canada's goal of having a 100% alternatively powered fleet. This innovative truck operates with zero tailpipe emissions, avoiding 97mt of CO₂ emissions annually. The partnership with ITD Industries has enabled Walmart Canada to adopt this pioneering technology for longer-haul trips within Ontario. The Walmart Canada president and CEO, Gonzalo Gebara, expressed pride in this milestone, highlighting the company's commitment to becoming a regenerative entity. The collaboration with Nikola signifies a leap forward in long-haul travel capabilities and environmental responsibility for Walmart Canada's fleet. The hydrogen-powered truck operates by storing hydrogen at high pressure, converting it into electricity in a fuel cell stack, and emitting only water vapor as a byproduct. This sustainable measure comes as Walmart Canada continues to serve 1.5 million customers daily through its network of 400 stores across the country. The introduction of the hydrogen FCEV follows the reopening of the Square One Supercentre in Mississauga as a flagship location.
