The Albanese Government in Australia has unveiled the Guarantee of Origin (GO) scheme as part of its commitment to a sustainable and green future for the country. This scheme, which recently passed parliament, aims to authenticate renewable electricity and low-emission products by providing high-integrity certificates that certify Australian low-emissions goods. By increasing transparency for consumers and encouraging sellers to reduce carbon intensity, the GO scheme is expected to drive investment in clean energy industries and help decarbonize the Australian economy. The scheme will also allow businesses to register and produce digital certificates, such as Product GO (PGO) and Renewable Electricity GO (REGO), to verify the origin and emissions of their products and renewable electricity sources. Notably, the GO Scheme will be crucial for renewable hydrogen, the first product to be included, and other products like green metals and low carbon liquid fuels. Additionally, through consultation on the exposure draft of supporting laws, industry stakeholders will have the opportunity to shape the rules for the GO scheme. Assistant Minister Wilson emphasized the importance of the GO Scheme in building Australia's future as a renewable energy superpower, creating jobs in green industries, and facilitating the transition to Net Zero emissions by 2050. Despite opposition from the Coalition, the Albanese Government remains dedicated to supporting green industries and ensuring accountability for new products in the emerging renewable energy sector.
