Channel Infrastructure, previously known as Refining NZ, has transitioned into a fuel import terminal post the decommissioning of its Marsden Point oil refinery. The company is now partnering with global green energy developer Fortescue to explore the production and distribution of synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) in New Zealand. This move comes in response to the challenge of decarbonizing aviation, especially in a nation heavily dependent on air travel. While technologies like green hydrogen and batteries pose limitations for long-haul aviation, SAF is considered a viable option. SAF, available in biogenic and eSAF forms, can be seamlessly blended with traditional jet fuel and has already made successful flights. Channel and Fortescue are collaborating on a pre-feasibility study to establish a large-scale eSAF production facility at Marsden Point, leveraging the site's infrastructure and location for efficient distribution. This initiative not only aims to decarbonize aviation but also to enhance New Zealand's energy resilience and stimulate domestic economic growth. The project signifies a significant step towards sustainable fuel production and aligns with global efforts to reduce aviation emissions.
