Deakin University recently unveiled the Hycel Technology Hub at its Warrnambool campus, marking the first facility of its kind in Australia. The 2,200 m2 bespoke center is dedicated to hydrogen research, testing, and training, strategically positioned within the Victorian Renewable Energy Zone. With a vision to drive the safe and commercially viable adoption of hydrogen in Australia's clean energy mix, the Hub offers purpose-built spaces for industry co-location, emphasizing fuel cell and hydrogen technologies. Vice Chancellor Professor Iain Martin highlighted Deakin's industry-focused approach, stating that the Hub enables tackling key industry challenges to unlock new markets. With a total program value exceeding $20 million, the investment underscores Deakin's commitment to regional development. Hycel Director Professor Tiffany Walsh emphasized the facility's hands-on approach to real-world hydrogen usage, fostering collaboration between the university, industry, and the community. The Hub features advanced equipment like the G400 fuel cell stack testing station, supporting various applications from land vehicles to generators. Additionally, it houses specialized laboratories, a community space for events and collaboration, and offices for associated research activities. By leveraging the unique facilities at Hycel, industry partners can enhance their competitiveness and explore global market opportunities. The funding for the Hycel Technology Hub, amounting to $9 million from both the Commonwealth and Victorian state governments, along with contributions from Deakin University, signifies a substantial investment in advancing hydrogen technologies.
