New Zealand-based Fabrum and Australian miner Fortescue have collaborated to commission a liquid hydrogen plant at Fortescue's Christmas Creek mine site in Western Australia. The plant, described as the largest in Australia, has the capacity to produce 350 kilograms per day of liquid hydrogen and store up to 600 kg. This initiative is part of Fortescue's Green Metal Project, aiming to produce green metal for global steel plants starting in 2025. The project incorporates hydrogen to power zero-emissions mining equipment, including haul trucks, showcasing the integration of sustainable practices in the mining industry. Additionally, the project includes a hydrogen refuelling station with electrolysers powered partly by solar energy to refuel hydrogen fuel cell-powered coaches. The Western Australian government has supported this station with a grant of AUD 2 million. Fortescue's emphasis on green hydrogen and sustainable mining practices aligns with a broader goal of reducing emissions and reliance on diesel in remote mining operations. The company's executive chairman highlights the importance of innovation and collaboration in building a green supply chain, emphasizing the role of hydrogen in creating sustainable mining practices.
