MAN Cryo to Design Hydrogen-Powered Ferries for Norwegian Company
Key Ideas
  • MAN Cryo, a part of MAN Energy Solutions, will design hydrogen-powered ferries for Torghatten Nord A/S, as part of a government initiative for emission-free vessels in Norway.
  • The project includes bunkering systems, hydrogen piping, and vent masts, with MAN Cryo serving as the system integrator for the hydrogen process plant.
  • The vessels will operate on green, compressed hydrogen and are scheduled for delivery in 2026, with all hydrogen equipment being installed in Norway.
  • MAN Cryo, known for its expertise in cryogenic equipment, has a history of pioneering sustainable solutions in the marine sector, including the world's first LNG fuel-gas system in 1999.
MAN Cryo has secured a contract from Torghatten Nord A/S, a Norwegian ferry company, to design and engineer two hydrogen-powered RoPax ferries. This initiative is part of a larger Norwegian government push for emission-free vessels, particularly aimed at the mainland-Lofoten Islands crossing. MAN Cryo, a specialist in cryogenic equipment solutions, will handle the detail design for bunkering systems, hydrogen piping, and vent masts for the newbuild ferries. Additionally, the company will act as a system integrator for the hydrogen process plant, collaborating with other major suppliers on the project. Torghatten Nord A/S, which recently won a ferry tender in northern Norway, will introduce two new vessels into the route, with the hulls constructed in Türkiye and outfitted in Norway. Both ferries will run on green, compressed hydrogen and are expected to be delivered in 2026, with all hydrogen-related equipment being installed in Norway as well. MAN Cryo, based in Sweden, has a strong reputation for its engineering solutions in the storage, distribution, and handling of liquefied gases, particularly in the marine sector. The company has a history of innovation, having supplied the world's first LNG fuel-gas system for a ferry in 1999 and later delivering the first LNG bunker vessel and liquid-hydrogen fuel-gas system for ships. This new project marks another significant step towards sustainable and eco-friendly maritime transportation.
