Mars' Wodonga site in Australia is embarking on a groundbreaking transition to become the country's first large-scale steam-based manufacturing facility powered entirely by renewable energy. The facility, known for producing popular pet food brands like Pedigree and Whiskas, aims to deploy a 100 per cent renewable energy solution for both electricity and steam within the next two years. This shift towards sustainability was unveiled during a site visit with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, emphasizing the milestone nature of the move. The project involves a significant $39.3 million investment in a Solar Thermal Plant featuring an 18-megawatt Parabolic Trough Concentrated Solar Thermal (CST) system capable of storing thermal energy for up to 10 hours. With a $17.2 million grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), this initiative marks the first commercial deployment of CST in Australia, demonstrating a commitment to decarbonizing industrial processes. Mars' approach includes leveraging Electric Thermal Energy Storage (eTES) technology to use renewable grid-connected electricity during off-peak hours for steam generation, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional gas usage. Additionally, through collaboration with the Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG), Mars will purchase Renewable Gas Guarantee of Origin certificates from Hydrogen Park Murray Valley, further enhancing its renewable energy portfolio. This strategic move aligns with Mars' global sustainability goals, including a 16 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain since 2015. The Wodonga project is a significant step towards Mars' Net Zero Roadmap, aiming to halve emissions by 2030. By combining innovative renewable energy solutions with collaborative partnerships, Mars is setting a new standard for environmentally conscious manufacturing practices while contributing to the regional economy of Wodonga.
