Mars' Wodonga site in Australia is embarking on a groundbreaking transition to become the country's first large-scale steam-based manufacturing facility powered entirely by renewable energy. The facility, known for producing popular pet food brands like Pedigree and Whiskas, aims to deploy a 100 per cent renewable energy solution for both electricity and steam within the next two years. This shift towards sustainability was unveiled during a site visit with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, emphasizing the milestone nature of the move. The project involves a significant $39.3 million investment in a Solar Thermal Plant featuring an 18-megawatt Parabolic Trough Concentrated Solar Thermal (CST) system capable of storing thermal energy for up to 10 hours. With a $17.2 million grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), this initiative marks the first commercial deployment of CST in Australia, demonstrating a commitment to decarbonizing industrial processes. Mars' approach includes leveraging Electric Thermal Energy Storage (eTES) technology to use renewable grid-connected electricity during off-peak hours for steam generation, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional gas usage.
