The Minns Labor Government of NSW has announced the design of the state's inaugural Hydrogen Centre of Excellence, aimed at training plumbers and gas fitters for the emerging hydrogen industry. This initiative, supported by a $25 million investment, will provide training for 8,250 plumbers and gas fitters in the first five years of operation. The center, established in partnership with the Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centre (PICAC), will offer practical training on hydrogen equipment, gas fitting techniques, and safety protocols alongside traditional plumbing skills. Not only will the construction of the center create job opportunities for apprentices and construction workers, but it will also address the current shortage of plumbers in NSW and Australia. Co-located at PICAC's Glenwood training site, the Hydrogen Centre of Excellence is scheduled to commence operations by 2027, with an expected staff of around 50. The collaboration between government, industry, and unions highlights the importance of building a skilled workforce to support the renewable energy transition and meet industry demands. The project aims to equip plumbers with the necessary skills to work with renewable energy technologies, emphasizing the economic growth and sustainability goals of NSW and Australia.
