Pioneering Green Hydrogen in Steel Production: National Mission's Bold Step
Key Ideas
- The Indian Union Government has sanctioned three pilot projects in the steel sector under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aiming to advance technology and promote green hydrogen use.
- These pilot projects will focus on implementing green hydrogen in steelmaking processes, showcasing their feasibility, safety, and economic viability for low-carbon iron and steel production.
- The sanctioned projects involve leading organizations like Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, Simplex Castings Ltd, and Steel Authority of India Ltd, with a total financial support of Rs. 347 Crore over the next 3 years.
- The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched with a substantial budget, aims to make India self-reliant in clean energy, reduce carbon emissions, and position the country as a global leader in green hydrogen technology.
The Union Government of India has approved three pilot projects as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission to explore the use of hydrogen in steel production. These projects aim to implement advanced technologies for utilizing green hydrogen in steelmaking processes. The objectives include demonstrating the safety and feasibility of green hydrogen-based steel production, evaluating economic viability, and promoting low-carbon iron and steel manufacturing. The projects will focus on producing Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) using 100% hydrogen in a vertical shaft, reducing coal and coke consumption in Blast Furnace by using hydrogen, and injecting hydrogen in a vertical shaft based DRI making unit. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has selected three organizations - Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, Simplex Castings Ltd, and Steel Authority of India Ltd - to implement these pilot projects with capacities ranging from 40 to 3200 tons-per-day. A total of Rs. 347 Crore will be provided by the Government of India to support these initiatives. The projects are expected to be completed within the next three years, showcasing the potential for scaling up such technologies in India. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, initiated with a significant budget, aims to bolster India's clean energy goals, reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports, and position the country as a leader in green hydrogen technology on a global scale.
