Airbus, Aena, Air Nostrum, Iberia, Exolum, and Repsol have come together to explore the development of Spain's first hydrogen airport hub. This collaboration aims to tackle the challenges associated with introducing hydrogen-powered aviation in the country. By involving the entire value chain, from energy production to ground operations, and engaging two airlines and multiple airports simultaneously, the partnership seeks to gain a comprehensive understanding of integrating hydrogen-powered aircraft into the airport ecosystem. The initiative extends beyond mere infrastructure considerations to encompass the specific demands of ground operations at airports. The overarching objective is to nurture and facilitate the expansion of the hydrogen aviation sector within Spain, leveraging the nation's capabilities in renewables and low carbon hydrogen production. Airbus, a key player in this endeavor, underscores its commitment to decarbonizing aviation and views the deployment of hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft as pivotal in this journey. Karine Guenan, Airbus' Vice President of ZEROe Ecosystem, emphasizes the importance of collaboration within the aviation industry to establish an end-to-end hydrogen supply chain that extends to airports. As part of its efforts, Airbus has launched the 'Hydrogen Hub at Airports' program to drive the proliferation of hydrogen infrastructure within the aviation sector. This program has already seen agreements with partners and airports across 13 countries, including Spain, highlighting the global nature of the initiative and the shared commitment to advancing sustainable aviation practices.
