Atome Energy's Green Ammonia Project in Paraguay: A Step Towards Sustainable Fertilizer Production
Key Ideas
  • Atome Energy has selected EPC contractors for its 145MW Villeta green ammonia project in Paraguay, with production aimed at displacing CO2 emissions.
  • The project will benefit from Paraguay's 100% hydroelectric grid, with a focus on producing calcium ammonium nitrate for green fertilizer.
  • Atome Energy's development pipeline includes the Yguazu hydro project in Paraguay and a 120MW project in Costa Rica, both contributing to sustainable ammonia production.
  • The company's shift towards green fertilizer over hydrogen is due to a slow market adoption of green hydrogen for mobility purposes.
Atome Energy, a green ammonia developer, has made significant progress in its sustainable energy endeavors by selecting engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors for its 145MW Villeta project in Paraguay. The project, led by Atome chief executive Olivier Mussat, aims to produce up to 264,000t/y of calcium ammonium nitrate, with the support of state power company Ande supplying energy from Paraguay's 100% hydroelectric grid. Environmental and operating licenses have been secured, and an offtake agreement is in the final stages of completion. Villeta is expected to displace 15Mt of CO2 over its lifecycle, aligning with Atome Energy's commitment to reducing carbon emissions. Additionally, the company is pursuing other sustainable projects like the 300MW Yguazu hydro project in Paraguay and a 120MW venture in Costa Rica. The Costa Rica project involves a collaboration agreement with state power company ICE and a focus on green ammonia production for fertilizers. Despite the potential of green hydrogen, Atome Energy has chosen to prioritize green fertilizer due to the sluggish market demand for green hydrogen in the mobility sector. The company's strategic shift reflects a commitment to addressing environmental challenges through sustainable solutions, leveraging Paraguay's renewable energy sources and expanding its footprint in Latin America's energy sector.
