Chile's desalination sector is undergoing substantial growth, primarily fueled by the emergence of green hydrogen projects integrating reverse osmosis technology. While mining remains a dominant force in driving such developments, the industry has diversified to cater to various sectors. Currently, there are 34 active projects in Chile with desalination components, collectively projecting a water production capacity of 38,864l/s. The government has taken proactive steps to address the country's worsening water scarcity crisis, including introducing a bill to regulate the desalination sector. Recent initiatives involve concession tenders for desalination plants in drought-affected regions like Coquimbo and O'Higgins. Despite progress, concerns have been raised regarding the government bill potentially hindering maritime concession acquisition. Notably, the projects encompass diverse sectors such as mining, human consumption, and green hydrogen, reflecting a total investment of US$19.8bn in desalination components. Antofagasta and Magallanes stand out as key regions for these projects, emphasizing both mining activities and green hydrogen production.
