Colombia's oil and gas sector is gearing up for a transformative year in 2025, with a strong focus on sustainability and growth. The country's efforts to balance natural gas production with decarbonization have led to key projects shaping its landscape. Offshore, the Sirius (ex-Uchuva) prospect is expected to be a significant contributor, with potential gas reserves of 6.1 trillion cubic feet and first gas production anticipated by the end of the decade. Additionally, the nearby Papayuela area could play a significant role in meeting the country's natural gas demand in the coming years. Onshore, projects in the Sinu-9 area and Maria Conchita block aim to ramp up gas output, while pipeline developments like the Barranquilla-Ballena line are set to enhance transportation capacity. LNG capacity at the Spec regasification terminal is also being expanded to meet growing demand. Notably, Colombia's energy transition is gaining momentum with Ecopetrol leading the way in green hydrogen production. The company is constructing the largest green hydrogen plant in Latin America at its Cartagena refinery, with plans to start production in 2026. With ambitions to have 1GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030 and multiple hydrogen projects in the pipeline, Colombia is making significant strides towards a cleaner energy future.
