  • The cargo containment system design meets international safety standards, allowing for the safe transport of liquid hydrogen with low boil-off rates.
  • CB&I's expertise in large-scale storage systems combined with Hanwha Ocean's gas carrier experience has resulted in an efficient and safe liquid hydrogen carrier design.
  • The collaboration between the two companies enables the possibility of international liquid hydrogen supply chains, marking a significant advancement in the hydrogen and shipbuilding sectors.
DNV has recently awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to CB&I and Hanwha Ocean for their collaborative effort in designing an 80,000m3 liquid hydrogen (LH2) carrier. The AiP signifies that CB&I's cargo containment system design for LH2 transport meets rigorous safety standards, including those outlined in the International Code of the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code) and certifications from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). The innovative cargo containment system consists of vacuum-insulated double-wall spheres, ensuring safe transportation of LH2 with minimal boil-off rates of only 0.05% per day. Mark Butts, Senior Vice President for CB&I, highlighted the successful partnership between CB&I and Hanwha Ocean, emphasizing that their combined expertise has led to the creation of a secure and efficient liquid hydrogen carrier design. Youngchang Shon, CTO and Head of Product & Technology Strategy at Hanwha Ocean, mentioned the extensive research conducted to ensure the carrier's performance, safety, and eco-friendly features, including an electric propulsion system powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Vidar Dolonen, Regional Manager of DNV Korea and Japan, praised the collaboration between CB&I and Hanwha Ocean as a remarkable example of global leaders in the hydrogen and shipbuilding industries working together to facilitate the shipping of liquid hydrogen. This achievement not only signifies a milestone in the advancement of liquid hydrogen technologies but also opens up possibilities for the development of international liquid hydrogen supply chains, contributing to a more sustainable future.
