Colombia's Ecopetrol, a major state-owned energy company, is set to embark on a groundbreaking initiative by constructing a green hydrogen plant at its refinery in Cartagena. The $28.5 million investment will pave the way for the largest green hydrogen production facility in Latin America, aiming to generate 800 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This strategic move is in line with President Gustavo Petro's agenda to steer Colombia away from fossil fuel dependency. Ecopetrol's CEO, Ricardo Roa, highlighted the company's commitment to modern and sustainable fuel production. Additionally, the company envisions a substantial financial upside, with projected earnings between $400 million and $485 million per year by 2040 from low-emission hydrogen production.
