The European Union (EU) and Uruguay are enhancing their energy cooperation, with a specific emphasis on green hydrogen and energy efficiency. Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson visited Uruguay to discuss the implementation of the MoU signed in 2023, focusing on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and renewable hydrogen. The EU sees green hydrogen as a vital technology to decarbonize key sectors and aims to develop a global trade in hydrogen and renewable fuels to support decarbonization targets in transport and steel production. Uruguay, with its abundant wind and solar energy, advanced infrastructure, and supportive legal system, is positioned to become a leading exporter of renewable energy, including hydrogen and its derivatives. The EU's support includes financing from the European Investment Bank for green hydrogen projects in Uruguay. Both parties are committed to deepening their partnership, with the EU investing significantly in Uruguay and planning further collaborations in renewable energy projects. This cooperation not only benefits both parties economically but also contributes to global efforts towards sustainability and clean energy production.
