Key Ideas
- Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla is set to begin production of Green Hydrogen by August under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
- The port aims to develop an ecosystem for green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol, with plans for Giga-scale plants and a 1 MW demonstration plant.
- Partnerships with companies like L&T and NTPC will support the transition to green hydrogen, with plans for hydrogen-powered buses and becoming a Methanol Bunker Point.
- The port has exceeded its cargo-handling targets for the fiscal year 2024-25, achieving a 13% year-on-year growth with existing infrastructure through efficient operations.
Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman of Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla, announced plans to kickstart the production of Green Hydrogen by the end of August as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The port aims to create an ecosystem for green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol, inviting major industry partners to establish Giga-scale plants and setting up a 1 MW green hydrogen demonstration plant. Collaborations with companies like L&T and NTPC will facilitate the shift to green hydrogen, including the operation of eleven hydrogen-powered buses in place of diesel buses. This initiative is expected to significantly contribute to achieving the goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions set by the International Maritime Organisation.
In addition to its green energy initiatives, Kandla Port aspires to become a Methanol Bunker Point for the Rotterdam-Singapore corridor, positioning itself as part of the world's green shipping corridors. Singh highlighted the port's operational success by surpassing its cargo-handling targets for the fiscal year 2024-25, achieving a 13% year-on-year growth without expanding capacity. The port's efficiency and strategic decisions have allowed it to unlock the full potential of its existing infrastructure, focusing on providing enhanced services like 'berthing on arrival' for vessels.
