Ohmium Partners with SwitcH2 for Offshore Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Project
Key Ideas
  • Ohmium International collaborates with SwitcH2 for a 300MW offshore floating green hydrogen and ammonia project in Southern Europe.
  • The project aims to produce 55,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and nearly 300ktonne of green ammonia annually, fueling oceangoing vessels sustainably.
  • Ohmium's compact PEM electrolysers will leverage solar, wind power, and seawater to generate green hydrogen, contributing to the clean fuel industry.
  • The partnership's efforts align with the growing demand for green ammonia as a clean fuel source, with the project anticipating green ammonia production by 2029.
Ohmium International, a green hydrogen company, has partnered with SwitcH2 to develop PEM electrolysers for a significant offshore project in Southern Europe. The project, led by SwitcH2 in collaboration with partners like BW Offshore, will establish an industrial-scale floating green hydrogen and ammonia production facility using FPSO technologies. Ohmium's PEM electrolysers will be integrated into SwitcH2's FPSO vessel, aiming to produce 55,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and almost 300ktonne of green ammonia annually. The production will primarily cater to fueling oceangoing vessels in a sustainable manner. By utilizing nearshore solar and wind power along with treated seawater, Ohmium's technology will ensure the efficient generation of green hydrogen. The produced hydrogen will then be used in an on-deck ammonia synthesis unit for further processing. The project, supported by the Dutch government and approved by the Norwegian certification agency DNV, anticipates the commencement of green ammonia production by 2029. SwitcH2's director, Bob Rietveldt, expressed pleasure in having Ohmium onboard for this pioneering endeavor, highlighting the suitability of Ohmium's electrolysers for the FPSO setting due to their high efficiency and modular design. Ohmium's CEO, Arne Ballantine, emphasized the growing market for green ammonia as a clean fuel source for the shipping industry and looks forward to addressing this demand through collaboration with SwitcH2. Additionally, Ohmium recently received European CE mark approval for its Lotus 1.5 electrolyser, meeting the EU's strict safety and environmental standards, further solidifying its position in the sustainable energy market.
