Singapore to Build Hydrogen-Ready Generating Unit for Low-Carbon Energy Future
Key Ideas
  • Singapore plans to construct a hydrogen-ready Combined Cycle Gas Turbine generating unit by 2029 to meet rising energy demand and transition towards a low-carbon energy future.
  • The new facility, developed by PacificLight Power, will have a capacity of at least 600 megawatts and will be located on Jurong Island in southwestern Singapore.
  • Initially capable of operating with 30 percent hydrogen, the unit aims to transition to burning 100 percent hydrogen in the future, aligning with Singapore's goal of sustainable energy usage.
  • The move is driven by the city-state's increasing energy needs from sectors like advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, and transportation electrification, expecting a substantial growth in power demand by 2030.
Singapore is set to build a new hydrogen-ready Combined Cycle Gas Turbine generating unit by 2029, as announced by the Energy Market Authority (EMA). The decision comes in response to the growing energy demand in the city-state, with a focus on ensuring sufficient generation capacity for daily activities. The EMA's chief executive highlighted the importance of transitioning towards a low-carbon energy future amid rising energy needs. The facility, to be developed by PacificLight Power, a local electricity retailer, will initially have a capacity of at least 600 megawatts. Positioned on Jurong Island, the unit will have the flexibility to operate with at least 30 percent hydrogen upon inception, with plans to eventually shift to burning 100 percent hydrogen. This initiative is part of Singapore's strategy to meet the increasing electricity demand driven by sectors like advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, and transportation electrification. Projections indicate a significant growth in the city-state's power system peak demand, necessitating the development of new generation capacity. Following a request for proposals in June 2024, PacificLight Power was chosen from six submissions to undertake the construction of the hydrogen-ready generating unit, aligning with Singapore's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
