Vale, a Brazilian miner, and GreenIron, a Swedish metallurgic technology company, have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on initiatives for decarbonization in the mining and metals supply chain. The collaboration aims to focus on key projects in Brazil and Sweden. One of the primary objectives includes developing feasibility studies for an innovative direct reduction facility in Brazil. The study will assess potential sites for the project, evaluate renewable energy options, and consider resource supply alternatives. Of particular interest is the exploration of using green hydrogen and other innovative solutions to mitigate the environmental impact of future operations. GreenIron's technology, known for its flexibility in feedstock options and capacity, is also compatible with the utilization of green hydrogen. As part of the collaboration, Vale will provide iron ore agglomerates to GreenIron's facility located in Sandviken, Sweden. Rogerio Nogueira, Vale's commercial and new business VP, highlighted the significance of the agreement in leveraging Vale's products, Brazil's competitive edge in green hydrogen, and GreenIron's expertise in sustainable iron production to offer low-carbon solutions within the industry. Edward Murray, CEO of GreenIron, expressed enthusiasm for the collaborative partnership, emphasizing its alignment with the vision for a sustainable mining and metals sector. The agreement reflects a shared commitment to pursuing opportunities that contribute to reducing the sector's climate impact significantly.
