Aramco, based in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, has finalized the acquisition of a 50% equity interest in the Blue Hydrogen Industrial Gases Company (BHIG), a Jubail-based company. BHIG's focus is on producing hydrogen, including lower-carbon blue hydrogen derived from natural gas with carbon capture and storage. This strategic move is part of a joint venture with Air Products Qudra (APQ) to establish a hydrogen network in the Jubail Industrial City area. The collaboration between Aramco and APQ aims to support the production and utilization of lower-carbon hydrogen, aligning with the Kingdom's objectives of reducing carbon emissions and diversifying its energy sources. Aramco's Executive Vice President of Strategy & Corporate Development, Ashraf Al Ghazzawi, highlighted the potential of this investment to contribute to the Kingdom's hydrogen network development, particularly in the Eastern Province. By integrating BHIG's hydrogen production with Aramco's carbon capture and storage activities in Jubail, the partners aim to capitalize on opportunities to reduce carbon emissions both locally and globally while fostering growth and energy portfolio diversification. Air Products Qudra's Chairman, Ahmed Hababou, emphasized that the joint venture signifies a strategic step towards enhancing the hydrogen network in the Eastern Province, catering to the needs of industries such as refining, chemical, and petrochemical. The Vice-Chairman of Air Products Qudra, Mohammad Abunayyan, expressed pride in the partnership with Aramco, underscoring the significance of integrating lower-carbon energy solutions into the Kingdom's energy landscape guided by Vision 2030.
