Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai Advance Liquefied Hydrogen Carrier Technology at Gastech 2024 in Houston
Key Ideas
  • Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai achieved Approval-in-Principle for an 80,000-cubic-meter electric-powered liquid hydrogen carrier.
  • The carriers operate without emitting carbon dioxide by generating electricity from naturally vaporized hydrogen gas.
  • HD Korea Shipbuilding's carrier features large-scale hydrogen tanks and an electric propulsion system using a dual-fuel engine running on bunker fuel and hydrogen.
Hanwha Ocean Co. and HD Hyundai Co. have taken significant steps towards commercializing liquid hydrogen carriers powered by carbon-free energy sources. At the Gastech Exhibition & Conference 2024 in Houston, the companies received Approval-in-Principle from the Norwegian classification society Det Norske Veritas for an 80,000-cubic-meter electric-powered liquid hydrogen carrier. This carrier, certified by DNV, operates by generating electricity from hydrogen gas naturally vaporized from the cargo hold, ensuring carbon dioxide-free voyages. Additionally, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering's liquid hydrogen carrier is equipped with large-scale hydrogen tanks and an electric propulsion system utilizing a dual-fuel engine that can run on both bunker fuel and hydrogen. This advancement marks a significant move towards sustainable shipping practices and showcases the ongoing efforts in the marine industry to embrace environmental sustainability.
