Pioneering Hydrogen Fuel Switching Project in Aberdeen, Scotland
Key Ideas
  • Wood plc in Aberdeen, Scotland has been awarded the front-end engineering design (FEED) stage of EET Fuels Hydrogen Fuel Switching project, a pioneering initiative in the UK.
  • The project aims to enable fuel switching to hydrogen in assets like the hydrogen-ready crude distiller furnace at the Stanlow Refinery, which could reduce emissions by 0.2 million tonnes per year.
  • Upon completion of the FEED stage, EET Fuels can proceed with the final investment decision next year, paving the way for the UK's first low carbon process refinery and enhancing energy security.
  • Both EET Fuels and Wood expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting the importance of decarbonisation projects for energy transition and UK energy security.
Wood plc, based in Aberdeen, Scotland, has been entrusted with the front-end engineering design (FEED) stage of the EET Fuels Hydrogen Fuel Switching project. This project involves utilizing hydrogen from EET Hydrogen for fuel switching at the Stanlow Refinery, with the aim of reducing emissions by 0.2 million tonnes annually. Wood's UK operations team will oversee the final designs of the fuel system and re-design core infrastructure for safe hydrogen combustion. The successful completion of the FEED stage will allow EET Fuels to make the final investment decision next year, advancing towards becoming the world's first low carbon process refinery in the UK. Deepak Maheshwari, CEO of EET Fuels, highlighted the importance of hydrogen fuel switching in their plans for the Stanlow Refinery, emphasizing the role it plays in decarbonization and ensuring fuel supply security in the UK. Martin Simmonite, Senior Vice President for UK Operations at Wood, expressed excitement about the collaboration and the critical role of such projects in the energy transition and UK energy security.
