Adani Total Gas Ltd has initiated a significant move by blending green hydrogen in the natural gas supply to households in parts of Ahmedabad, India. The company's objective is to contribute to reducing emissions and supporting India's ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions. Currently, 2.2-2.3% green hydrogen is being mixed with piped natural gas in the Shantigram area of Ahmedabad, benefitting around 4,000 consumers for their cooking needs. This blending initiative aims to lower greenhouse gas emissions, enhance energy security, and promote sustainable development in the region. Adani Total Gas plans to incrementally increase the hydrogen blend to 5% and then to 8%, with the eventual goal of extending the project to other areas of Ahmedabad and locations under its city gas licences. The integration of green hydrogen into natural gas pipelines is a strategic step to generate heat and power with reduced emissions compared to using natural gas alone. This aligns well with the global perspective that green hydrogen is a crucial fuel for the future, offering a pathway to decarbonize various sectors. While green hydrogen is emission-free, it presents challenges such as potential corrosion of pipelines and equipment. However, studies have indicated that blending up to 10% hydrogen with natural gas is feasible without causing harm. Notably, other entities like NTPC and GAIL (India) Ltd are also exploring the use of green hydrogen-blended gas in residential settings, demonstrating a growing interest in integrating sustainable energy solutions into everyday consumption practices.
