The sun-drenched Chilean region of Antofagasta is embarking on a journey to develop a local green hydrogen industry roadmap. With abundant renewable energy resources and existing export infrastructure, Antofagasta is well-positioned for this transition. The government has initiated a tender process to select a party for diagnostic work, aiming to create a strategic instrument in collaboration with stakeholders from various sectors. This move aligns with the national green hydrogen action plan recently published. Project developers face challenges such as reducing the cost of green hydrogen, securing offtake contracts, and exploring potential exports in e-fuels and green ammonia. In Chile, the focus lies on utilizing green hydrogen in key sectors like fertilizer and explosives production, co-firing in power generation, and addressing the needs of the prominent mining and farming industries. Antofagasta has already seen the submission of green ammonia and hydrogen projects for environmental review, indicating the region's commitment to sustainable energy solutions. With a clear emphasis on public-private collaboration and the involvement of academia and civil society, Antofagasta's green hydrogen initiatives are poised to drive economic development and sustainability in the region.
