Charbone and ABB Join Forces for Green Hydrogen Production Expansion in North America
Key Ideas
- Charbone Hydrogen Corporation and ABB have signed an MoU to develop 15 green hydrogen production facilities in North America over five years.
- ABB will supply modular electrical substations to connect the facilities to local utilities and support standardization for improved efficiency.
- The collaboration starts with the Sorel-Tracy plant in Québec, powered by hydroelectricity, to serve as a model for future projects.
- ABB's Extended Operator Workplace system will be implemented for 24/7 monitoring, a first in North American green hydrogen production plants.
Charbone Hydrogen Corporation and ABB have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the development of up to 15 modular and scalable green hydrogen production facilities across North America in the next five years. Under the agreement, ABB will be the preferred supplier of modular electrical substations to connect the facilities to local utilities. ABB will handle the design, engineering, fabrication, testing, and supply of these substations, aiding Charbone in standardizing its engineering systems for better energy efficiency and reliability. Additionally, ABB may also provide automation, electrification, and telecom solutions as required by the projects. The collaboration kicks off with the Sorel-Tracy facility in Québec, projected to link to the Hydro-Québec grid soon. This plant, powered by hydroelectricity, will produce green hydrogen and set the blueprint for upcoming facilities, with the next site planned for the greater Detroit area. The Chief Operating Officer of Charbone, Daniel Charette, highlighted the rapid deployment of the plug-and-play modular approach at Sorel-Tracy, aiming to accelerate production startup and contribute to industry decarbonization efforts. ABB Energy President, Per Erik Holsten, emphasized the significance of green hydrogen in the energy transition and expressed pride in the collaboration to expand green hydrogen facilities in North America. Apart from the MoU, Charbone will implement ABB's Extended Operator Workplace (EOW) system across its upcoming facilities. This system, a first in North American green hydrogen production plants, will enable continuous monitoring from local and remote control centers to optimize production and minimize downtime.
