Deutsche Bahn (DB) and UK-based ITM Power have signed a collaboration agreement to advance clean transportation and infrastructure, with a strong focus on green hydrogen adoption and derivatives. The partnership will involve exploring each other's technologies, sharing expertise on incorporating green hydrogen in transport systems, creating strategies for green hydrogen integration in operations, and evaluating the efficiency of green fuel supply chains. DB has initiated the introduction of hydrogen vehicles in its fleets and has committed to phasing out its 1,300 diesel locomotives with hydrogen-powered trains by 2050. ITM Power's CEO Dennis Schulz expressed enthusiasm in supporting DB's efforts to promote sustainable transport solutions within the EU. While hydrogen-powered trains have made progress in parts of Europe, their role in long-term rail decarbonisation strategies is still being assessed. Some German regional operators, such as EVB and RMV, have faced issues related to hydrogen supply and component reliability, prompting temporary transitions back to diesel units. The collaboration between DB and ITM Power signifies a step forward in the development of innovative and eco-friendly transportation solutions, contributing to the broader efforts towards sustainable mobility and environmental conservation.
