DRIFT Energy's Ambitious Plans for Green Hydrogen Production at Sea
Key Ideas
  • DRIFT Energy raised £4.6 million to build its first high-performance sailing vessel aiming to produce green hydrogen at sea.
  • The company plans to deploy a fleet of vessels to deliver green hydrogen on demand, targeting small island states, heavy industries, shipping, and superyachts.
  • The vessels use advanced routing software to maximize wind and wave conditions, potentially achieving double the load factor of North Sea wind farms.
  • DRIFT's vision includes operating a 'Hydroloop' system across tradewinds worldwide, delivering hydrogen to ports and ships, supported by funding from Octopus Ventures and Innovate UK.
DRIFT Energy, a British firm based in Bath, has secured £4.6 million in funding to develop a high-performance sailing vessel designed to produce green hydrogen at sea. The vessel will utilize deep ocean wind to power an onboard electrolyser for hydrogen production. DRIFT aims to eventually have a fleet of these vessels to provide green hydrogen on demand, especially targeting small island states, heavy industries, shipping, and superyachts. By optimizing wind and wave conditions through advanced routing software, the vessels could potentially achieve significantly higher load factors than traditional wind farms. The company is also planning to establish a 'Hydroloop' system, allowing the vessels to produce and deliver hydrogen globally. DRIFT's successful sea trials with a prototype sailboat have paved the way for the construction of the first full-scale vessel, equipped with a 1 MW electrolysis plant and capable of storing up to four tonnes of hydrogen per trip. The project has received support from Octopus Ventures, Innovate UK, and the Blue Action Accelerator, indicating a positive outlook for DRIFT's mission. Despite challenges in scaling up the green hydrogen sector, projects like DRIFT's could play a key role in decarbonizing industries such as shipping.
