Eletrobras, a prominent electricity company in Latin America, has joined forces with Suzano, the world's largest cellulose producer, to collaborate on sustainable fuel production in Brazil. The partnership focuses on leveraging biogenic CO2 from Suzano's facilities to develop renewable hydrogen and synthetic fuels, with the goal of reducing reliance on fossil fuels in transportation. Discussions between the two entities began in 2023 and culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to explore the feasibility of establishing a synthetic fuel production unit. The agreement underscores a strategic alliance aimed at meeting the increasing global demand for eco-friendly energy solutions, particularly low-carbon hydrogen derivatives. By combining biogenic CO2 from biomass combustion with renewable hydrogen produced through water electrolysis, the collaboration aims to create clean synthetic fuels like e-methanol, which have high scalability potential and can replace fossil fuels in sectors such as maritime transport.
