Establishing Centres of Excellence for Green Hydrogen in India
Key Ideas
  • The Government of India is inviting proposals to set up Centres of Excellence for Green Hydrogen to drive innovation and sustainability in the energy sector.
  • These Centers will focus on research, skill development, and knowledge dissemination to advance Green Hydrogen production, storage, and utilization technologies.
  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports, decarbonize the economy, and establish India as a leader in Green Hydrogen technology globally.
The Government of India, through the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, has issued a call for proposals to establish Centres of Excellence (CoE) for Green Hydrogen under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The primary goal of these CoEs is to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy by promoting innovation and sustainability in the energy sector. These centers will serve as hubs for cutting-edge research, skill development, and collaboration among various stakeholders including industry, academia, and the Government. The CoEs will play a vital role in advancing Green Hydrogen production, storage, and utilization technologies, ultimately enhancing energy independence in the long term. By facilitating partnerships between public and private entities, research institutions, and universities, these centers aim to drive innovations in Green Hydrogen technologies, leading to improved efficiencies and new product development. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in January 2023, with substantial financial allocation until 2029-30, aims to make India self-reliant in clean energy. The Mission not only contributes to decarbonizing the economy but also reduces the country's reliance on fossil fuel imports. Through the establishment of these Centres of Excellence, India aspires to assume technology and market leadership in Green Hydrogen, setting an example for global clean energy transition.
