Statkraft, Europe's largest producer of renewable energy, has secured support from the European Union for its green hydrogen production project in Emden, Lower Saxony. The project includes a 200 MW electrolysis plant and a 50 MW heat pump system, with negotiations underway for a substantial grant of up to EUR 107 million. This initiative is part of Statkraft's ambitious plans in Germany to produce green hydrogen and green district heating. The project is expected to generate around 20,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen and 50,000 MWh of green heat annually, contributing significantly to local decarbonization efforts. The funding from the EU's Innovation Fund aims to promote the development of innovative technologies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. Statkraft aims to become a key player in the green hydrogen sector in Germany, with plans to supply industrial customers and district heating in Emden. The company has also initiated a hydrogen pilot project with a 10 MW electrolyser to cater to filling stations for hydrogen in the region. The EU grant recognition underscores Statkraft's innovative approach in the hydrogen sector and supports their strategic goal of becoming a significant player in green hydrogen production in Europe.
