Aotearoa New Zealand's green hydrogen solutions company, Fabrum, has inaugurated an advanced liquid hydrogen test facility in partnership with Christchurch International Airport. The facility aims to bolster the development of green hydrogen-powered technologies, particularly in the aviation sector. It provides a dedicated space for companies to test and enhance their liquid hydrogen systems, including liquefiers and gas management technologies. Dr. Ojas Mahapatra, Fabrum's CEO, highlighted the critical resource the facility offers for refining hydrogen technologies. Fabrum is currently collaborating with global aviation firms to innovate liquid hydrogen storage systems, with priority given to testing the performance and reliability of hydrogen infrastructure. The partnership between Fabrum and Christchurch Airport extends to a hydrogen consortium comprising Airbus, Fortescue Future Industries, Air New Zealand, and Hiringa Energy. According to Christopher Boyle, Fabrum's executive chair, the test facility signifies the collective commitment to establishing a hydrogen ecosystem, focusing on aviation sustainability. The availability of liquid hydrogen on-site is deemed crucial for accelerating hydrogen-fueled operations in the aviation industry, paving the way for a zero-emissions future. Notably, the hydrogen test facility at Christchurch Airport is touted as the first of its kind globally, providing on-demand liquid and gaseous hydrogen, reinforcing the city's position as a center for liquid hydrogen activities.
