GAIL (India) Ltd Commissions Maiden Green Hydrogen Plant in Madhya Pradesh
Key Ideas
  • GAIL (India) Ltd has commissioned a 10-megawatt green hydrogen plant in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, marking a significant step towards alternative energy production.
  • The plant aims to produce 4.3 tonnes of green hydrogen per day with a high purity of 99.999% using electricity sourced from renewable sources like solar energy.
  • This initiative aligns with India's National Green Hydrogen mission, targeting 5 million tons of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030 to reduce carbon emissions and meet energy demands.
  • GAIL plans to use the hydrogen for captive purposes at Vijaipur initially, with future plans to dispense it to retail customers in nearby areas and explore blending it with natural gas for wider applications.
GAIL (India) Ltd has successfully commissioned its maiden green hydrogen plant in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, marking a significant milestone for the nation's largest natural gas transmission and distribution company. The 10-megawatt proton exchange membrane electrolyser imported from Canada will facilitate the production of around 4.3 tonnes of green hydrogen per day with a remarkable purity level of 99.999%. This plant operates by utilizing electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar energy to split water and produce green hydrogen. The initiative falls in line with India's National Green Hydrogen mission, which aims to achieve 5 million tons of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030 as part of efforts to lower carbon emissions and address energy needs. Initially, the green hydrogen produced will be utilized alongside natural gas for internal processes at the Vijaipur plant, with future plans to distribute it to retail customers in neighboring regions. Furthermore, GAIL is investing in solar power plants to ensure a sustainable power source for the electrolyser. The company is also exploring blending hydrogen with natural gas, with ongoing tests in Indore to evaluate the feasibility. Collaborative studies with Engineers India Limited and IIT Kanpur are being conducted to assess increased blending ratios beyond the current regulatory limit of 5%. This venture signifies GAIL's commitment to adopting green technology and advancing towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy production landscape.
