German Project Receives €350m Aid to Produce Synthetic Aviation Fuels with Renewable Hydrogen
Key Ideas
- The European Commission has approved a €350m German project to support Concrete Chemicals in producing synthetic aviation fuels using renewable hydrogen and biogenic CO2.
- The project involves partners like Enertrag, Cemex, and Sasol ecoFT, integrating technologies like electrolysers, reverse water-gas shift, and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.
- The PtL kerosene produced by the project will be classified as renewable fuel of non-biological origin and is expected to deliver significant greenhouse emissions savings compared to fossil fuels.
- The initiative aligns with the European Green Deal and aims to contribute to sustainability goals in the aviation sector, although the affordability of synthetic kerosene may require continued policy support.
The European Commission has given the green light to a €350m German initiative designed to assist Concrete Chemicals in the production of synthetic aviation fuels. This project will utilize renewable hydrogen, biogenic CO2 from a cement plant, and various advanced technologies to create Power-to-Liquid (PtL) kerosene and renewable naphtha. Partners like Enertrag, Cemex, and Sasol ecoFT will collaborate on integrating different processes such as electrolysers and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to achieve this goal. The PtL kerosene is set to be considered a renewable fuel of non-biological origin, with a capacity to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional jet fuel. With production expected to commence by 2028 in Rüdersdorf, Germany, the project aims for a 90% reduction in lifecycle emissions. This aligns with the objectives of the European Green Deal and ReFuelEU Aviation targets. While there are prospects for synthetic kerosene becoming more cost-effective by 2050, its adoption may hinge on continued policy backing to compete with conventional jet fuel and accommodate the growth in global aviation demand.
