Germany's state-owned energy company, Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE), has entered into a significant partnership with Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power to supply green hydrogen to the European market. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) outlines the annual supply of 200,000 tons of hydrogen, produced using renewable sources like wind and solar power, starting in 2030. This move aligns with Germany's hydrogen strategy, which envisions substantial hydrogen imports to meet energy demands. The hydrogen, shipped as ammonia, is crucial for sectors such as steel production and as a backup for renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. SEFE, now under new ownership after Russia's Gazprom, will play a key role as a co-investor and primary off-taker in marketing the green hydrogen to customers in Germany and Europe. The company's vision involves becoming a prominent player in the green hydrogen and green ammonia market, emphasizing sustainability and energy transition goals. The agreement signed in Riyadh was attended by Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman and German Finance Minister Jörg Kukies. This partnership is part of SEFE's broader strategy, as the company has also secured agreements with other countries like Brazil and Norway for hydrogen imports in the coming years. Germany's ambitious plans include importing significant amounts of hydrogen by 2045, highlighting the country's commitment to hydrogen as a key element in its energy future. The collaboration between SEFE and ACWA Power demonstrates a positive step towards a more sustainable and renewable energy future for Europe.
