Green Hydrogen Injection into Salt Caverns: Decarbonising Industry in Southern France
Key Ideas
  • Lhyfe supplied 350 kg of green hydrogen to Géométhane for a test injecting hydrogen into salt caverns in Manosque, France.
  • This experiment aims to study hydrogen behavior within the natural gas storage system, contributing to energy balance and local energy independence.
  • The project led by DLVAgglo urban community and Géométhane targets decarbonising the Marseille-Fos-Sur-Mer industrial site using green hydrogen.
  • Storing hydrogen in salt caverns allows for flexible energy usage, helping manage peak consumption and store surplus energy from renewables and nuclear power.
Lhyfe, a pioneer in green hydrogen production, recently delivered 350 kg of green hydrogen to Géométhane for a groundbreaking test in Manosque, France. The test involved injecting hydrogen into salt caverns at Géométhane's site to observe and analyze its behavior within the natural gas storage system. This initiative is part of a larger project aiming to decarbonize the Marseille-Fos-Sur-Mer industrial site by utilizing green hydrogen. By storing hydrogen in salt caverns, the project seeks to enhance local energy independence by facilitating the balancing of energy sources. Hydrogen stored in this manner can be extracted as needed to address peak consumption periods or re-injected to store surplus energy generated by renewables and nuclear power plants during low-demand periods. This approach contributes to the overall sustainability and efficiency of the energy system. Matthieu Guesné, the Founder and CEO of Lhyfe, expressed pride in the project's progress, highlighting the multifaceted benefits of hydrogen in decarbonizing various sectors, including transportation and industry. The utilization of salt caverns for hydrogen storage is gaining traction across Europe as a viable option for large-scale energy storage solutions. This trial represents a significant step in harnessing the potential of green hydrogen for energy storage and highlights the importance of innovative approaches to meet sustainability goals in industrial settings.
