Eight leading Austrian energy and industrial companies have come together to form the Hydrogen Import Alliance Austria (HIAA) with the objective of developing a roadmap for the import of green hydrogen. This initiative, crucial for the decarbonization of industry and the sustainability of Austria as a business location, addresses the growing demand for green hydrogen that domestic production alone cannot fulfill. Gas Connect Austria, a member of HIAA, is contributing its expertise in infrastructure to enable the import of hydrogen via pipelines by 2030, emphasizing the cost-effectiveness and scalability of utilizing the existing natural gas pipeline network. Stefan Wagenhofer, the Managing Director of Gas Connect Austria, highlighted the country's potential to become a central hub in the European hydrogen backbone through strategic investments in infrastructure. The collaboration within HIAA aims to create competitive conditions for green hydrogen import, focusing on affordability, reliability, and sustainability in Austria's future energy supply.
