India Increases Allocation for Green Ammonia Production under National Green Hydrogen Mission
Key Ideas
  • Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) increases allocation under Mode 2A Scheme for Fertilizer sector by 2 lakh tonnes per annum for Green Ammonia production.
  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims for a production capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum of Green Hydrogen by 2030 to promote clean energy and self-reliance in India.
  • The Mission will lead to economic decarbonization, reduced dependence on fossil fuel imports, and position India as a leader in Green Hydrogen technology and market.
  • The amendments under the Mission are in response to the growing demand for Green Ammonia and its derivatives across various sectors in the country.
The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) in India is actively implementing the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) to achieve a production capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum of Green Hydrogen by 2030. Under this mission, MNRE issued Scheme Guidelines for the SIGHT Programme – Component II, focusing on incentivizing the procurement of Green Ammonia Production, specifically catering to the fertilizer sector. Initially, the capacity available for bidding was 5,50,000 tonnes per annum, later increased to 7,50,000 tonnes per annum in response to the rising demand for Green Ammonia. The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) also facilitated the selection of Green Ammonia Producers through a competitive bidding process. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in January 2023 with a significant budget, aims to make India self-reliant in clean energy and lead the global Clean Energy Transition. The mission will play a vital role in decarbonizing the economy, reducing reliance on fossil fuel imports, and positioning India at the forefront of Green Hydrogen technology and market. The amendments made under the Mission reflect the growing traction and demand for Green Hydrogen and its derivatives in various sectors, emphasizing a significant step towards achieving the Mission's targets.
